Join Anna and Ochryn for an introduction to switch dancing - in which we have the freedom to swap roles with our partner mid-dance!
You'll learn the basics of switch dancing, develop core switching technique and learn the tools you'll need to discover your own switch steps (along with plenty of our favourites to get you started.)
Anna and Ochryn teach one of London's busiest weekly swing dance classes. They've taught, performed and enjoyed competition success internationally and teach a social-first style of dancing that emphasises connection to the music, your partner and your own body. They value improvisation and musicality and are passionate about helping dancers find their own individual voice and dance style.
This is an Intermediate/Advanced class with the assumption that the attendees will already have the basic knowledge and capability to dance both roles at an intermediate level.
What to Bring:
- Lunch or snacks. (There are no local shops nearby!)
- Water
- Dance shoes or flat shoes that you'll feel comfortable dancing in upon a wooden floor
- Comfortable clothes that allow movement whilst covering your back and upper arms
- if you wear jewellery ensure it's free of sharp points or edges
- Consider also a change of clothes for after the session as well as a towel, fan and deodorant
In Lindy Hop, switch dancing (often just called “switching”) is when the lead and follow swap roles mid-dance. Instead of one person always leading and the other always following, they trade who’s guiding the movement, sometimes multiple times in a single song.
A lot of Lindy Hop scenes encourage dancers to learn both roles, so switching has become more common than it used to be. If you watch social dancing at a big swing event, you’ll often see couples flipping roles a few times during a single song. It’s fabulous to watch and definitely a great skill to have as part of your dancing.
Switching brings playfulness and an element of surprise to the dance.
